Ariana Miyamoto is a beauty pageant contestant. She is the winner of Miss Japan 2015 and is scheduled to represent Japan at the next Miss Universe Beauty Pageant. Ariana is the first mixed-race contestant to represent Japan. Being mixed race in a country that is 98% ethnic Japanese is not easy. Unfortunately, Ariana faced significant racist backlash when she won her crown. Some people feel that she shouldn’t represent Japan at the international level because she isn’t “Japanese enough”. Ariana, who is half Japanese and half African-American, spent her early childhood in Japan and moved to the US when she was a teenager. She returned to Japan and graduated high school. I wanted to feature Ariana on the English Board to encourage students to talk about ethnic and racial diversity. Also, Ariana speaks fluent English (and of course, Japanese)!
