Edgar Allan Poe is surprisingly well-known in Japan. I think it’s the descriptive imagery and costume potential that make him appealing. There is even a famous Japanese writer, Taro Hirai who writes under the pseudonym, Edogawa Ranpo (say it three times really fast, sound familiar?), who popularized Poe’s work in Japan and paved the way for mystery fiction in Japanese literature. Edgar Allan Poe was a great addition to my festive Halloween board!
